Events

The Gender Summits are an initiative to promote gender equality at all levels of scientific research and innovation; they convene regional and global stakeholders at conferences worldwide to demonstrate the importance of including women both as agents and subjects of scientific research, identify opportunities for change and mechanisms to implement these changes, and form communities around these objectives. Previous Summits have been held in Brussels and in Washington, D.C.; Gender Summit 5 will be the first to be held in Africa, and will be followed by Gender Summit 6 in Seoul and Gender Summit 7 in Berlin later this year.

Gender Summit 5 Africa, with the theme: Poverty alleviation and economic empowerment through scientific research & innovation: Better Knowledge From and For Africa, will be held 28-30 April in Cape Town, South Africa. The program includes keynote speeches by Naledi Mandor, Minister of Science and Technology of South Africa, and Shahida Elbaz Mafeje, Executive Director of the Arab and African Research Centre in Egypt, as well as three days of panel discussions and knowledge exchange forums. An introduction and overview of the GenderInSITE initiative will be given during the exhibition and reception period of the Summit on Tuesday, 28 April by Prof. Roseanne Diab, Executive Director of theAcademy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) – host of the southern Africa regional focal point for GenderInSITE – and Prof. Sibusiso Moyo, Vice Chair of the OWSD South African National Chapter. This event will take place at the HSRC booth from 5:30-6:15.
