Women's Leadership in the Global Science System

10:00-11:30 Saturday, February 15, 2020

As gender equality and gender equity in science receive ever-increasing attention amongst decision-makers, the gender gap in scientific leadership stands out prominently as an unresolved challenge. This session provides three perspectives that address the issue of women’s leadership in the global science system. Firstly, based on interviews with women in key leadership positions, their pathways to success are explored and some of the common features uncovered as a means of assisting younger scientists to navigate their path to the top. Secondly, lessons learned from leadership capacity development courses for women are presented and discussed to highlight how women can overcome some of the obstacles facing them. Finally, the links between gender and inclusivity are highlighted to emphasize the importance of fully utilizing the full human resource potential to resolve the challenges of sustainable development and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
