GenderInSITE at the World Science Forum, Budapest 2019

Budapest, Hungary 21 November 2019

This year's World Science Forum will take place at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest, 20-23 November 2019.

GenderInSITE are holding a Thematic Session on Gender Equality in STI: an Ethical Issue, together with UNESCO, OWSD, South Africa's National Research Foundation, and the Ministry of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology of the Gambia.

Gender equality is a human right and issues such as gender discrimination and gender inequality in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) all have ethical dimensions. Furthermore, as was highlighted by the Declaration of the World Science Forum 2017, diversity is a key enabler of excellence in STI and is essential to optimize its relevance and impact. Unfortunately we are still far from women and girls’ full and equal participation in STI. UNESCO, GenderInSITE and OWSD are playing key roles in raising awareness and taking up these issues through a wide range of innovative initiatives focused on promoting women and girls in and for science, supporting the careers of women scientists and improving gender-related STI policies. In this context, in 2015 UNESCO launched the STEM and Gender Advancement (SAGA) project to assist governments and policy-makers in closing the gender gap in STI. The project has already had a strong positive influence in supporting governments and policy-makers in the establishment of STI gender-related policies. GenderInSITE has recently launched a report on women’s leadership in global science and made a number of recommendations to overcome the traditional barriers to the top. OWSD continues to attract women scientists from developing countries to pursue PhDs and to support them at the critical Early Career level.
